In part two of the Secrets To Increasing Your Self-worth series, you learnt what you might be experiencing when you have low self-esteem.

As you know, self-worth issues can cause considerable suffering, and it is not a healthy way of living. Consequently, in this article, I will share five tips you can apply now in your life to build your self-worth or self-esteem.

Tip #1: Build your self-esteem or self-worth from the inside out.

Build strength so that you can best cope with the challenges of life. You can become stronger by doing the work and being increasingly aware of whom you are. Get to know yourself better and how you tend to act in certain situations. Once you have an idea, increase your awareness by identifying how would you like to behave instead and decide what you desire to experience.

When you have a high level of self-awareness you build the belief that there is nothing you cannot accomplish. This new belief is a much healthier way to live than giving in to fear.

Know your worth. We are all gifted with talent, and you are no exception. You probably lack resourcefulness which is stopping you from applying your gifts and talent. 

 

Tip #2: Change the conversation you have with yourself

  • Do you tend to put yourself down constantly?
  • Do you believe: "you are not good enough, you always make mistakes, you are not loveable, you are good for nothing etc.?"

If so, stop putting yourself down and start being kind to yourself instead. Make the conscious decision that whenever you catch yourself putting yourself down, you will imagine how a nurturing, kind, and loving mother would treat you instead. I am sure she would be encouraging, loving and telling you she loves you. She would also say that all is good. In your self-talk use comforting and reassuring words. Believe that there is always room for improvement and nothing to fret about. 

 

Tip #3: Stop comparing yourself to others

To build self-worth this is one fundamental thing you must stop. Do not compare yourself to others but learn from them instead. They become, then, a source of inspiration.

When you have low self-esteem and compare yourself to other people, you develop an inferiority complex. For example, you compare their successes and achievements to yours. When someone achieves more than you, you believe that you are not worthy.

Consequently, the problem that emerges is that you measure your worthiness according to the achievements of others. Self-worthiness is a deeper ideal and does not rely on comparing yourself to others. It is inner knowing and the experience that you are appropriate to life and the requirement of life. 

 

Tip #4: Trust yourself more

  • Do you trust others more than you trust yourself?

If so, it is time to trust yourself more to build self-esteem. For example, when you are given a task at work, do you trust that you will do your best to fulfil it? One way of trusting yourself more is by showing courage and challenging yourself. Give yourself a challenge today to boost your self-esteem. Try something new, and trust that you will accomplish it. 

It could be committing to excellence or completing something you have always wanted to do, but it scares you.

It is time to validate your unique gifts, for you are a gift to the world. Do not dim your light or let anyone else dim your light for you.

 

Tip #5: Let go of your shortcomings.

When you have low self-esteem you tend to have a negative self-image. You can change your negative, depreciating self-image. Start today to create a strong self-image by visioning the great being you wish to become and building a new identity. 

Let go of your shortcomings and create more successes in your life. When you experience more success, you come out of your comfort zone and build self-confidence.
