There has never been a faster way to adjust to change than when the whole world was forced to go into lockdown and adopt social distancing since March 2020.

All of these changes mean that we had to reorganize our lives in a positive way so that we could function better, improve our health and reduce stress.

The CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, announced last week that their employees are allowed to work from home as long as they want, in perpetuity. Since lockdown and for the purpose of this article the change I am most interested in is from going to work to working from home. 

I am familiar with the work from home model. I have worked from home since 2009 when I started to facilitate personal development. Therefore, I understand perfectly the pros, cons and challenges of working from home.

In this article you will discover six practical tips on how to best work from home you can use now:

Tip #1: Create the right working environment

You need a dedicated quiet space or room you can use as your working area where you will not be easily distracted or disturbed. With the whole family being at home, if applicable, make sure that you have a sign on your office door that says: “Work In Progress” if you need the peace and quiet to focus. Once the door is opened it means you are readily available.

Tip #2: Be well equipped

Ensure that you have an ergonomic work station which includes good lighting, a comfortable chair which supports your back and neck as well as a computer which is at the right level for you to work comfortably.

Tip #3: Make the best use of your time

In order to make the best use of your time working from home you need to schedule your day the night before or before you sit down and open your computer. This will increase your efficiency and give you a greater sense that you are getting things done. There is nothing worse than sitting at your computer and not knowing what you are trying to achieve or what you need to do next.

Tip #4: Be practical

Make sure that you have at hand all of the resources you will need throughout the day so that you do not have to look for them later.

Tip #5: Take breaks

Take breaks every 50 minutes. Spending too long sitting at the computer has dire consequences on your health like neck strain and back problems. It also reduces the amount of oxygen entering the body. Therefore, have a timer which rings every 50 minutes, get up, stretch, rehydrate, have a break for 10 minutes and start again.

Some people suggest to have a power hour for 25 minutes then rest. You can try to have a break every 25 or 50 minutes and see what works best for you. I personally work for 50 minutes then stop, stretch, have a break for let’s say 10 minutes then start again. This is a great tip I got from the leading high performance coach Brendon Burchard.

Tip #6: Avoid overworking

One of the pros of working from home is that you can manage your time as you wish. However, do not fall into the trap of overworking. I have found myself working 10 hours some days, which I do not recommend at all. I suggest instead that you give yourself a command that you will work 7 hours maximum 5 days a week and no more. It is in fact counter-productive to work more hours than that. You feel exhausted and you still need more rest the following day. It is best in my opinion to stop when your body says: “STOP!”
