Other people are blasé about making new year's resolutions because they struggle with accomplishing their goals.
However, they struggle for the following reasons:
- A lack of commitment. I learnt from John Assaraf that there is a difference between being interested and being committed to an idea. In other words, you need a high level of commitment to accomplish your resolutions. However, commitment alone is not enough.
- They are not motivated enough because they do not have a why. Or they are unclear about what motivates their decision. The lack of clarity leads to inaction. I am so glad I pressed the pause button last year to take a step back, review my activities and stop pushing so hard. You might relate.
- A lack of focus. We make resolutions at the beginning of the year then we forget about them because they are not our focus. If they were, I believe we would put our energy into them.
- A lack of perseverance. Other people who set new year's resolutions and struggle to follow through might be good at starting but not finishing. As a result, they need to take into consideration all the points I have just mentioned.
You cannot rely on old and ineffective habits to transform your results this year. You need to reinvent yourself and create new ones.
Therefore, to build new success habits, you need to check your commitment, motivation, focus and perseverance levels.
I hope these initial steps will help you start the year with great optimism as you strive to achieve your goals this year.
Let me remind you of your action steps to accomplish your goals:
- Answer the following questions on a scale of 1-10 (1 being not at all. 10 being very much)
- How committed are you to accomplishing your goals this year on a scale of 1-10?
- How motivated are you on a scale of 1-10?
- How focused are you on a scale of 1-10? This question means that if you lose focus, how committed are you to regaining focus?
- And lastly, how willing are you to persevere no matter what on a scale of 1-10?
When you answer these questions, your results will let you know whether your new year resolution is a committed decision. If not, you might need to review your goal or goals.
Happy new year again!
Make it a balanced and powerful one!
